Restarting Materials: RePUra™ and a New Era of Textile Circularity

In recent years, the global supply chain has been confronted with a shared reality: raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce, and the linear “use-and-dispose” model is no longer sustainable. Climate change reminds us that every material must be designed for an extended life cycle. A high-performance jacket may accompany us on only a few mountain expeditions, yet it can remain on the planet for more than two centuries. Because existing recycling technologies are unable to process blended and composite structures, these “high-performance wastes” have become invisible burdens within current recycling systems, with large volumes diverted to incineration or landfills—severely constraining the textile industry’s progress toward true circularity.

The Composite Fiber Bottleneck | The Real Barrier to Textile Recycling

Most performance fabrics are engineered from multi-layer composite constructions—such as PET, PU, and elastane—delivering functionality at the cost of recyclability. While the world generates over 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually, less than 1% is truly recycled back to the material level. The reason is clear: composite materials are inherently difficult to separate. As I often say, “What gets discarded is not the material, but the fact that technology hasn’t caught up yet.” If textiles are to be reborn, the industry must break through the technological deadlock of composite material deconstruction.

Circu-Texfilm | Chemical Depolymerization Unlocks Composite Recycling

To overcome the limitations of composite recycling, we partnered with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop Circu-Texfilm, a proprietary chemical depolymerization and repolymerization platform. Without disassembly and without decolorization, it can directly process composite textiles such as PET/PU and PET/OP. Through molecular-level chemical deconstruction and re-polymerization, we regenerate materials that can be remanufactured into waterproof, breathable, low-carbon membranes. This technology marks the first time the textile industry can achieve a material-agnostic recycling model, formally enabling a closed-loop pathway in which end-of-life garments can return to garments.

The World’s First Recyclable PU Functional Membrane for Composite Textiles

After countless rounds of R&D validation and process calibration, Circu-Texfilm has been successfully commercialized as RePUra™—the world’s first waterproof and breathable PU functional membrane capable of recycling and remanufacturing complex composite textile structures. RePUra™ delivers high moisture permeability, high hydrostatic resistance, and high elasticity, without the need for decolorization and with minimal wastewater generation. It is ideally suited for sportswear, outdoor apparel, and military textiles, enabling brands to fulfill sustainability commitments in a traceable, scalable, and industrially viable manner. This innovation opens the door to the circular economy—not only for Singtex Group, but for the textile industry as a whole.

Sustainable Competitiveness | The Next Phase of Materials Strategy

Global demand for circular fibers and recycled materials is accelerating rapidly. Beyond 2026, Singtex’s role will become even more clearly defined. We will continue to enhance the stability and predictability of recycled materials, integrate AI-driven technologies for material identification, classification, and process optimization, and accelerate the productization of recycled membranes. At the same time, we will collaborate closely with brand partners to build fully operational circular supply-chain platforms, while expanding applications into home furnishings, construction materials, and industrial textiles.
