SINGTEX LIBRETTO No. 5
Author: Business Angelica Lai, Asia-Pacific Business Division, SINGTEX® Group
Everyone’s encounter with foreign cultures begins differently. For me, that entrance was sake’s aroma—warm, delicate, like whispered language quietly opening new ways of understanding the world.
Language as Starting Point: Opening Cultural Doors Through Sake’s Aroma
During my time working in Japan, I actively engaged with locals to improve language skills. Thus, I befriended sake enthusiasts, practicing Japanese while tasting during gatherings, truly entering sake’s world for the first time.
Compared to other spirits, sake’s moderate alcohol content and smooth, delicate entry makes it easily approachable. Deeper understanding revealed sake’s rice-based composition, with flavors influenced by regional rice varieties and water quality, creating unique brewery characteristics. Even within single breweries, climate variations create annual subtleties. These details make every bottle tell its unique story, becoming my continued sake fascination’s source.
Interest: The Gentle Guide to Professionalism
Sharing sake passion with friends, we frequently tasted together and shared discoveries. Discovering online sake sommelier beginner certification courses, I decided to systematically deepen this interest. Adding understanding and professionalism to beloved fields, I embarked on a deeper sake knowledge journey.
Through courses and continuous tasting, I gradually developed keener senses while understanding sake transcends beverages—it crystallizes Japanese culture, history, and craftsman spirit. This represents traditional craftsmanship combining patience and artistry, with sake sommeliers serving as cultural ambassadors to the world.
Sake is Taste- And the Start of Cultural Connection
Sake: A Gentle Bridge for Cross-Cultural Dialogue
When engaging Japanese clients, sake naturally becomes the most comfortable icebreaker. In business settings, sake carries cultural symbolism with inherent affinity. Particularly within Japan’s unique “Nominication” culture, toasting not only closes distances but opens understanding and trust doors.
This familiarity with sake not only promotes cultural interaction but enables more comfortable workplace connections.
Values Hidden in Flavors Quietly Take Root in the Workplace
Sake transcends personal interest—it becomes a light in my career. Through it, I learned viewing culture from different perspectives while learning to listen and respond. SINGTEX provided a stage for transforming personal passion into professionalism, showing me work and self-growth can be intimately interdependent and mutually nourishing.
Sometimes we convey concepts through fabric; sometimes share experiences through language; sometimes it’s a drink that, in the moment of raising glasses, expresses our inner recognition and passion.
We’re all value transmitters, and those values often hide in life’s gentlest moments.
Note: 飲みニケーション (Nominication) combines “飲む (drinking)” and “Communication,” referring to Japan’s unique culture of promoting mutual communication and deepening relationships through drinking.
