SINGTEX LIBRETTO NO.5
Author: Amanda Chiu, Senior Specialist, Americas Business Division ,SINGTEX® Group

Sometimes, physical fatigue speaks more honestly than any report. For Amanda, Pilates is not merely a workout—it is a practice of “rediscovering dialogue with oneself.” Since 2023, she has learned to listen to her body through breath and movement, gradually finding her center again. At SINGTEX, our pursuit extends beyond textile innovation and sustainability; it also embraces focus, resilience, and long-term consistency. Amanda’s story reflects the SINGTEX spirit—anchored in stability, allowing every breath and every creation to stay aligned with human balance.

Beginning with a Single Breath: My Encounter with Pilates

I began practicing Pilates in July 2023 when I realized my posture, energy level, and metabolism were declining. After searching for nearby fitness classes, I joined a trial course. What started as one class per week soon increased to three, accompanied by dietary adjustments. After about six months, I noticed significant improvement in both my physical condition and mental clarity. When the gym launched an instructor training program, I enrolled to better understand the body’s mechanics—and eventually obtained my Pilates coaching certification.

Origins of Pilates

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates during World War I. A German-born physical trainer, Joseph explored gymnastics, martial arts, and yoga due to his poor health as a child. In the 1910s, he developed rehabilitation exercises for injured soldiers, using springs and bed frames—laying the foundation for today’s Reformer Pilates. In 1926, he immigrated to the United States and opened the first “Pilates Studio” in New York with his wife Clara, gaining popularity among dancers and performers. Joseph named the method Contrology, emphasizing the importance of “mindful control of the muscles.” Over time, Pilates has evolved with modern medical and sports science, making it widely applicable for strengthening, rehabilitation, posture correction, and restoring physical balance.

Stability Begins at the Core

Consistent Pilates practice strengthened my core and lower-body muscles and improved my endurance. At work, I found myself more focused and mentally steady. Through each breath and movement, I learned to slow down, stay present, and build a body that felt both stronger and more balanced.

A Turning Point | Letting Go of Perfection and Embracing Consistent Change

There were moments when I doubted myself—until one day, I could finally fit back into my pre-pregnancy pants. I had tried many methods: extreme dieting, intense exercise, only to regain the weight every time. Each setback made me more frustrated, wondering if change was even possible.

Until one day, I stopped demanding perfection from myself and simply said, “Just move a little more than yesterday, and fuel your body a little cleaner.” With 10–30 minutes of daily training and a bit more mindfulness at every meal, I gradually began to see changes. One day, when I opened my closet and pulled out a pair of long-stored pants, I put them on—and the button closed. What got me there wasn’t luck or talent, but the version of myself who chose consistency every single day. As long as you’re willing to stay the course, progress will show. This journey—from doubt to discipline—taught me to treat myself with compassion and ultimately became the starting point of my path into coaching.

The Key Features and Benefits of Pilates

Pilates is characterized by slow, controlled movements with an emphasis on breath and core engagement—training both stability and extension. Some benefits I personally experienced include:

1.Core Strength, Better Posture,

and Higher Sitting Tolerance

Pilates effectively targets the abdominal, spinal, and pelvic floor muscles, offering substantial benefits for individuals who spend extended hours working at a computer:Reduces lower-back discomfort and cervical-shoulder tensionIncreases the ability to maintain proper seated posture for longer durationsDecreases distractions or irritability caused by physical discomfort.

2.Greater Flexibility and Joint Mobility

Unlike weight training, Pilates focuses on controlled muscle lengthening, making it suitable for various ages and fitness levels.

3.Fat Reduction and Body Sculpting

Although not high-intensity cardio, the method increases metabolic efficiency through muscle activation and breathwork—especially when combined with balanced nutrition.

4.Enhancing Focus and Relaxatio

Each movement is performed in coordination with intentional breathing and mindful attention, helping to reduce stress and improve overall sleep quality.Pilates emphasizes the synchronization of movement and breath, enabling practitioners to concentrate on a single task at any given moment—a key aspect of mind–body connection—and to cultivate awareness of subtle physiological signals (interoception). This enhanced focus naturally extends into the workplace, supporting calmer, more grounded performance during presentations, communication, and decision-making.Sustained practice contributes to emotional stability and strengthens one’s capacity for attention, execution, and overall personal resilience.

Teaching and Learning as Mutual Empowerment

After becoming an instructor, I began teaching classes at the JA1989 studio and sharing wellness practices with colleagues. Hearing comments like “my back feels better” or “I’m sleeping more soundly” brings me more fulfillment than any sales metric.

I love Pilates because it allows me to help others improve their physical condition and integrate well-being into their daily lives—adding warmth and care to the workplace.

JA1989:Making Health a Shared Culture

I am grateful that our company cultivates a culture where exercise is not just an individual choice but a shared commitment. This reflects SINGTEX’s people-centric philosophy—supporting employees in finding balance between work and life.

The Way of Breath, Integrated Into Everyday Life

Pilates is more than physical training—it is a dialogue between body and mind. Through focus and breath, we find strength in stability and resilience in balance. This dedication mirrors the SINGTEX spirit—expanding our potential, one breath at a time.
